Why is Sustainable Cooking Important

Published by Heena Qureshi on

Consumption of food is absolutely necessary for the maintenance of life on earth; in its absence, it is impossible for any form of life to persist. The consumption of food facilitates the growth of living creatures and supplies the energy required for carrying out the myriad of tasks involved in living a normal life. Even though we have the potential to ingest fruits and vegetables in their raw form, doing so is not the way for our bodies to achieve optimal growth and development.

We have easy access to a wide variety of vital raw ingredients that can be used in cooking. Rice, grains, pulses, and vegetables are a few excellent examples of such foods. Cooking uncooked food is not something that is particularly novel to human beings. In point of fact, it has a rich history that can be traced back to our previous human civilisation, which flourished on the surface of the globe many thousands of years ago.

It’s possible that cooking started as soon as people figured out how to light fires using wood. It was at this time that we began to include cooking into our everyday lives as humans. The first generations of our people cooked their meals by fashioning from stones what they called Chula’s, which were similar to furnaces.

After a while, people realised that excessively heating stones could be fatal, so the practise of using stones to make chula was discontinued at that point. The man discovered an application for earthen furnaces. As human thought progressed, they discovered that the use of clay for Chula was preferable to the use of stone Chula since clay did not pose the same health risks.

Clay Chula was finally able to make his home in the kitchen of a house over time. The burning of wood continued throughout this time period. Even in some of the most distant parts of the world, the majority of people still cook on wood fires. A mere two or four decades ago, people started to become aware of the impact smoke from burning wood had on their surrounding environment. He became proficient in the utilisation of liquefied petroleum gas as a means of overcoming the challenge. Liquefied petroleum gas comes in cylinders.

People attach it to stoves so that the flames produced by gas that is stored in cylinders can be used to prepare food. Although the usage of liquefied petroleum gas provided us with relief from the smoke that we inhaled when burning wood, the fact that it is a non-renewable reserve presents a concern in that it will cause future generations to face a lack of the resource when it is their turn to use it. The use of liquefied petroleum gas can also result in explosions, which have the potential to do significant damage to both our lives and our property.

The demand for sustainable fuels for cooking is necessitated by the drawbacks associated with the use of wood and cylinders containing liquefied petroleum gas. A relatively new innovation known as an energy-efficient stove shows promise as a long-term answer to the problem of how to burn fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas and wood simultaneously. Regrettably, as a result of a lack of understanding as well as social and cultural hurdles, its application is extremely limited.
